Senior Data Scientist at Canva in Sydney (hybrid) leading AI/ML pipeline design on AWS, driving product innovation and mentoring junior scientists.
Join a fast‑growing tech team in Sydney where you’ll lead the design and delivery of advanced AI/ML solutions that power our flagship products. You’ll work closely with product owners, data engineers and cloud architects to turn complex business problems into scalable, data‑driven outcomes.
Architect, develop and productionise end‑to‑end machine‑learning pipelines on AWS (SageMaker, Bedrock, Lambda, Glue).
Lead experimental modelling work – from hypothesis formulation through to validation and performance monitoring.
Collaborate with data engineering to design robust data ingestion, transformation and feature‑store strategies.
Mentor junior data scientists and drive best‑practice standards for code, documentation and reproducibility.
Translate business requirements into technical specifications, presenting findings to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Stay current with emerging AI research and evaluate new tools or frameworks for potential adoption.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of our MLOps workflow, ensuring models are secure, scalable and cost‑effective.
7+ years of hands‑on experience building AI/ML solutions in production environments.
Advanced proficiency in Python (pandas, NumPy, scikit‑learn, PyTorch/TensorFlow).
Deep knowledge of AWS services – SageMaker, Bedrock, Glue, Redshift, and serverless compute.
Strong background in data engineering concepts: ETL, data modelling, streaming, and feature stores.
Proven track record of designing, testing and deploying statistical or deep‑learning models at scale.
Excellent problem‑solving skills with the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly.
Desirable: Experience with MLOps tools (MLflow, Kubeflow, Terraform) and a PhD or Master's in Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field.
